One of the secrets to the undeniable charm of Elliminook is it manages to
combine the splendour of a grand Victorian country residence with the warmth
of a rose covered cottage, succeeding on both fronts to impress and cosset
its guests. Regular visitors will notice the constant changes being wrought
on this circa 1865 villa by owners Jill and Peter Falkiner, adding to their
sympathetic restoration of the National Trust classified homestead.
The latest is a sun-drenched courtyard making an excellent place for one of
Jill's legendary breakfasts or an afternoon cuppa, or for more active types
there's also a croquet and petanque pavilion to go with the established
tennis court. In fact, the extensive gardens invite wandering at any time.
Accommodation
Visitors arrive at the property via a sweeping driveway flanked by privet
and box hedges, past century old trees and colourful garden beds. The
elegant Homestead has a high slate roof and a shaded wrap around verandah.
An impressive passageway with Baltic pine floorboards and a stained glass
archway leads to the beautifully decorated and furnished guest sitting room,
dining room, bedrooms and a gallery that overlooks the central paved
courtyard bordered with prolific iceberg roses.
The house was restored in
stages between 1989 and 1997 to provide 4 guest bedrooms, 3 with ensuite
bathrooms and one with a private bathroom with a spa bath. One room, the
original kitchen, has been converted into a cosy bedsitter complete with
open fireplace and ensuite, and has an old bakers oven still in the wall.
Exposed bricks, polished floorboards and comfortable country style
furniture give the room a very special appeal.
