Nearby Regional Activities
Spectacular rainforests, national parks, secluded islands and beaches, pristine coral reefs, plentiful fishing spots, historical townships, genuine country hospitality, scenic drives, great shopping and fabulous dining - relatively undiscovered, the Mackay region offers a unique holiday experience that is an affordable and diverse escape from the crowds.

The region has a delightful tropical climate that is similar to that found in the Hawaiian Islands. The atmosphere is relaxed and casual as are the dress standards. Summers consist of warm, tropical weather without extreme temperatures and mild sunny winters. The average water temperature is a heavenly 22 degrees.

1. Mackay's Heritage Trail - a self guided trail of Mackay's outstanding collection of art deco buildings and facades and Heritage Listed early colonial structures. The colourful city centre is also the location for a variety of shopping, dining and entertainment venues.

2. Mackay's Regional Botanical Gardens - the city's newest attraction fulfils a plan first declared back in 1877 with 36 hectares of gardens and lagoons.

3. Artspace Mackay - is a refreshing blend of both museum and gallery and is housed in an imposing structure that takes an amusing theme - iron panels rolled back to create the effect of an open sardine can revealing a glimpse of the inside displays including national and international exhibitions.

4. 31 beaches - Long, sandy beaches some as close as 5 minutes from the city are the locations for inviting holiday resorts.

5. Mackay Marina - an integrated development with a 330 berth yacht marina overlooked by newly completed apartment blocks, a hotel and an excellent al fresco dining precinct. Standing sentinel on the marina's foreshore is a memento of Mackay's maritime history - a Victorian lighthouse built in 1885 and now open for guided tours.

6. Cape Hillsborough National Park - where rainforest meets the beach and where you can watch the sunrise on the water's edge with local wallabies - a great natural experience.

7. Islands and Reef - Offshore are the islands of the Cumberland Group, so named by Captain James Cook. Brampton, St Bees and Keswick Islands are just three of the 70 or more islands and beyond lies the Great Barrier Reef.

8. Pioneer Valley – cane fields and quaint country townships lead the way to Eungella's rainforest.

9. Eungella National Park - vast rainforest tracts, spectacular views, waterfalls and platypus spotting.

10. Finch Hatton Gorge - a cool oasis of waterfalls and swimming holes in the foothills of Eungella National Park. Go forest flying through the treetops!
