Steve’s Whale One has been named by Bindi and Bob Irwin in honour of their father Steve, who died in 2006 making another of his world famous wildlife documentaries. The bid to raise whale awareness comes at the start of a season where the giant humpbacks have never been more vulnerable with Japan intending to harpoon 50 for scientific research. To the late Steve Irwin, whaling was the most horrific sight he had ever seen.

The Humpback Whale is the fifth largest of the great Whales. Adult females grow to 15m, slightly longer than adult males. A mature Humpback may weigh 40 tonnes. Humpbacks are generally blackish in colour with white under and at the sides of the body. The flippers or pectoral fins are mottled on top and white below. The underside of the tail flukes is white with a black or grey pattern that uniquely identifies each animal as an individual. Jaws and flippers often carry large barnacles which grow on the Whales as they migrate North, and fall off again as they migrate back to the cold waters of the Antarctic Ocean.

Whale Watching may involve many senses. In addition to observable behaviours above the waterline, you may also experience the characteristic sounds eminating from the blowholes as the Whale exhales. You may hear Whales sing either though our Hydrophone or sometimes as echoed through the hull of the vessel.
