Sunsail Cruises Whitsundays Fleet

The Sunsail Whitsundays Base - is located on Hamilton Island - the heart of the beautiful Whitsunday Islands and the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, which is a World Heritage National Park. With its own jet airport, 10 cosmopolitan restaurants, an expansive range of resort and self-contained accommodation and a ton of activities, Hamilton Island is Australia's largest and most popular island holiday destination - especially popular for yacht charter holidays due to the magical surroundings. Airport transfers are complimentary and just a short 5 minute ride. The nearest sheltered anchorage is just 30 minutes cruise from our base so you can comfortably head off after you arrive.

Sunsail Cruising Area: Sunsail's cruising area is three times larger than other Whitsunday yacht charter companies, meaning our guests have the freedom to explore hundreds of islands and inlets between Bowen and Mackay. Discover our magical cruising grounds and secluded anchorages with information on suggested itineraries, interactive maps, distance charts plus weather guides so you can make the most of your sailing holiday.

Yacht License: Experience is more important than paper qualifications. Although no formal qualifications are required to charter your own bareboat yacht, Sunsail Whitsundays does insist that at least two of your crew members have previous sailing or yachting experience. This should include a minimum of 5 days sailing experience on a similar sized vessel for the skipper and 3 days experience for the first mate.

Upon booking you will be asked to fill out a sailing resume outlining your sailing history. If you do not have enough experience or are a complete novice, you will be required to hire a skipper for the duration of your charter or alternatively why not join one of our 'Learn to Sail' courses to prepare you for your holiday.

Professional Crew for Hire: Our crew are chosen for their friendliness and professionalism, and are dedicated to making your holiday as enjoyable and relaxing as possible. You may take advantage of both a skipper and hostess for a crewed yacht charter of complete indulgence, or create your own culinary delights and just have a skipper taking the helm of your Sunsail yacht so you can sit back and enjoy. These staff are yours for the entire charter.

Charter Start Time: Contract start time is 12 noon on the first day of your sailing holiday, providing us with enough time to fully prepare your yacht. If you are already at our Sunsail Whitsundays base or wish to start your charter earlier, we will endeavour to meet your requests. We can advise you of a briefing time at 8.30am on the day your charter commences.

Charter Finish Time: Contract finish time on your last day is 10.00am. Late check-outs are available depending upon your vessel’s movements the following day. Late check-outs cannot be confirmed until the day before you finish your yacht charter. Again, we will always endeavour to accommodate all special requests.

Getting to Hamilton Island: Fly directly to Hamilton Island's jet airport or travel to the Whitsundays by road and then fast ferry from Shute Harbour. A free transfer from either Hamilton Island Airport or Hamilton Island Marina ferry terminal is included in the cost of your charter.

What to Bring: Not very much! Each Sunsail yacht is fully equipped for charter from every imaginable viewpoint. Apart from your personal possessions, you should bring your own... beach towels, sunscreen, swimwear, polarised sunglasses (essential for seeing fringing reefs ), footwear – good solid footwear is advisable (an old pair of sneakers are ideal), broad brimmed hat, light clothing that will provide protection from the sun, tracksuit or warm clothing for the evenings and soft luggage where possible!

Provisioning: Careful provisioning is an important part of the preparation for your sailing holiday. If driving to Shute Harbour you may wish to bring your own supplies on the ferry or by pre-arranging your provisioning with us, your vessel will be fully stocked with the type of catering you require prior to your arrival. Sailing can be very thirsty work. We trust you will come well supplied or we can stock your yacht with a range of beer, wine, spirits and cold drinks so you will never run dry!
