Dive and Snorkel Sites visited by Down Under Dive
Norman Reef - is almost 80 km's off Cairns, on the very Outer Edge of The Great Barrier Reef. You will see a great variety of fish life, pelagics, turtles, coral gardens, swim throughs, caves, giant clams and more. Ampitheatre like sandy floors are surrounded by coral hillocks, reef edge and bommies. The swim throughs are excellent but some of the caves are not safe and a guide is necessary to lead you and show you which ones are safe. There are walls of all sizes and shapes with overhangs common.
Saxon Reef - marvel at the Hard corals, moray eels, lion fish, Maori wrasse and beautiful coral gardens. It offers excellent shallow snorkelling over the bommie tops. And swim throughs and gullies are scattered throughout the reef. The white sandy floor reflects the light and on a sunny day turns the whole area into a classic magical reef scene. This is an awesome coral location.
Hastings Reef - is a large popular snorkelling and diving reef. Hard and soft corals, walls, swim throughs, turtles and stingrays. There is over 13kms of reef edge and back reef sand floors to explore. Staghorn corals are regular features with giant clams perched on the shallow reeftop and bommies, and good swim throughs up into the reef. Thousands of tame fish, including the world famous Wally the giant wrasse have made their home here.
Michaelmas Reef - a 10 km long reef with a sandy cay. Many giant clams, walls, black coral, swim throughs, black coral trees, lion fish and Maori Wrasse can be seen here. There are excellent bommies to explore where you will encounter batfish, cleaner stations, crayfish, turtle weed clumps and more.
