Outback and Opals - 2 Day
Day One: Melbourne - Mungo - Andamooka
Depart Melbourne 7.00am in a comfortable twin-engine aircraft for a 1½ hour flight to Mungo National Park. At Mungo, drive out to see the unusual "moon scape" of Lake Mungo. Then return to the lodge for an early lunch. At 1.00pm fly to Broken Hill to refuel. Then fly over The Eldee Man - a 2 kilometre face drawn into the landscape) and over the Flinders Ranges and Lake Torrens to Andamooka arriving about 3.30pm. This is a unique opal-mining town with a fascinating history and a character all of its own. Be met by Margot Duke and/or Peter Taubers and discover a wealth of warmth and colour amongst the locals. Take a tour around this rough and ready and rather rugged town with Margot or Pete, see opals cut and go down Albert's personal underground mine. Accommodation and Dinner is at Dukes Guest house.
Day Two: Andamooka - Muloorina - Melbourne
After breakfast, continue sight-seeing around Andamooka, then tour the historic miners cottages with Inga Duke, a wonderful German-born local, and learn something about the uniqueness of the people who live in these places. At 11.00am fly 30 minutes to Muloorina Station on the edge of Lake Eyre. Be met by the owners, and have a brief tour of this fascinating outback station before lunch. Depending on the temperature, maybe even a swim in the nearby creek or thermal bore. At 2.00pm depart for Melbourne via the Southern Flinders Ranges (Wilpena Pound), landing at Mildura for fuel before a 1½ hour flight to Melbourne arriving approx 7.00pm.
