Mungumby Lodge is a boutique private wilderness retreat and nature refuge located on the northern edge of the Mangkal-Mangkalba National Park which surrounds two of the properties boundaries. The lodge also boarders the famous Black Mountain (Kalkajaka) a 260 million year old rock formation. This area is a group of primitive rainforest listed parks by the World Heritage Commission as one of the earths most unique and valued assets and is an area of high cultural significance to the Kuku Yalanji people.

At Mungumby Lodge on Cape York just south of Cooktown, we offer a genuine Australian experience where the simple things count. Our boutique resort style lodge is at the apex of three unique and very distinct tropical landscapes.
Primitive tropical rainforest listed by the World Heritage Commission as one of the earths most unique and valued assets. Outback equivalent to the best Australia has to offer, along with a pristine wilderness tropical coastline on the inner edge of Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef.
Mungumby Lodge have ten spacious wooden bungalows with ensuite bathrooms and private patios. These are individual, private bungalows positioned within the lush gardens, separate from each other and the main building. A large spacious Homestead building with wide-open plan living areas right on the edge the beautiful Mungumby Creek, overlooking the rainforest is the central focal point for meals, meeting other guests, reading or just plain relaxing by the pool.
There are no telephones in the rooms, however fax, e-mail and message services are available and the homestead phone line is portable. We also have wireless Internet in some areas of the lodge. Television and mobile coverage is not available at Mungumby Lodge due to the location. Nature is our entertainer!
Dining at Mungumby Lodge in the Tcharibbeena Restaurant
Mungumby Lodge have no self catering facilities in the rooms or lodge itself, therefore meals are an important part of the Mungumby Lodge Experience. The Tcharibbeena Restaurant offers daily changing gourmet blackboard menus boasting high quality, fresh local produce and the world’s best water. Vegetarian meals are arranged upon prior request and any special dietary needs (Vegetarian, Gluten free etc) need to be advised prior to arrival to avoid disappointment.
Gourmet picnic backpacks are available for clients heading on a walk for the day to one of our many waterfalls. The Tcharibbeena Restaurant, bar and lodge pool area are fully licensed with no BYO (bring your own) facilities. We have refrigeration available if you require, or we are able to chill ice packs for eskies and our bar sells ice by the bag.
There are various alternative restaurants and eating options 25 minutes away in Cooktown Township if you are looking for variety or something simple. We are located a short distance from the infamous Lions Den Pub a historic watering hole opened in 1875 to service the original Lions Den tin mine (now ruins) behind Mungumby Lodge. Clients often enjoy the local atmosphere and cold ales.

Once settled you will have the comfort of knowing that you have chosen the perfect base to explore Far Tropical North Queensland’s most pristine landscapes. Nature is our entertainer as we are surrounded by some very intricate and diverse Eco Systems.
Within walking distance are opportunities to swim in croc-free jungle creeks and waterfalls, observe wildlife, immerse oneself in the Aboriginal culture, relive history or simply enjoy the Lions Den Hotel- a local Australian pub built in 1875 to service the Lions Den Tin Mine workers. A nice spot for a cold ale and chat with Tom, for the last 30 years a permanent resident there. The Lions Den Mine ruins are located in the rainforest national park on the side of the mountain behind Mungumby lodge.
To compliment the lodge, Safari Expedition package options to visit some of Queensland’s finest aboriginal rock art sites, deserted beaches, and the stunning rainforest are on offer. Aboriginal guides can be arranged as an extra to the safaris at Laura for the Quinkan region, Wujal Wujal for the Eastern Yalangi region and Hopevale with Willie Gordon. A scenic flight over the reef and coastline landing on the Great Barrier Reef at Lizard Island for snorkeling, is a great addition to any holiday adventure or honeymoon or include a deep-sea ocean fishing charter to the pristine Ribbon Reefs or light tackle estuary fly fishing if you are a keen angler.

Getting to Cooktown, Cape York and Mungumby Lodge
The drive from Cooktown is only 35 minutes south on the Mulligan Highway, it is sealed all the way to near the lodge driveway (4kms). Coming from Cairns, Helenvale is located 3 kilometres north of the Little Annan River crossing on the inland Mulligan Highway. This road is sealed all the way from Mareeba to to the Little Annan River and on to Cooktown.
Travelling the coast road, which is very scenic the road is sealed till Cape Tribulation. From this point on, the track is unsealed and very much 4x4 country. It is known as the notorious Bloomfield Track and spans from Cape Tribulation to the Bloomfield River where it then becomes the Bloomfield Road until Shiptons Flat.
The coast road is often closed in the Wet season due to swollen river crossings, however the inland road is open 12 months of the year day and night and a great drive north.
